What actually matters when you are choosing, and what is marketing noise.
Confirm your floor is sealed
Sealed ceramic, porcelain, vinyl, linoleum and sealed stone are all fine. Unsealed hardwood, laminate and engineered wood with a worn finish are not, and the damage from forcing moisture into seams is permanent.
Test with a few drops of water in a hidden spot. If it beads for ten minutes and wipes off with no dark patch, the seal is sound. Also check your flooring warranty, as many explicitly exclude steam cleaning.
Use distilled water in hard-water areas
Tap water leaves mineral scale inside the boiler, which reduces steam output and eventually blocks the machine entirely. It is the most common cause of a steam mop failing early.
Distilled water costs little and removes the problem. If you use tap water, descale on the schedule in the manual.
Vacuum first, always
Steam mopping over grit turns loose dirt into mud and grinds it across the floor, and the pad clogs within a few square metres.
Vacuum or sweep thoroughly first. A steam mop sanitises and lifts residue; it is not a substitute for picking up debris.
Keep the head moving
Leaving a steam mop stationary concentrates heat and moisture on one spot, which can lift vinyl adhesive or mark a finish. Keep it moving in overlapping passes.
For stuck-on spots, hold the head just above the mark for a few seconds to soften it, then wipe. Do not park the mop on it.

Can I use a steam mop on hardwood floors?
Only on properly sealed hardwood, and even then many flooring manufacturers advise against it and will void a warranty. Heat and moisture can penetrate seams and cause cupping or delamination, which is not repairable. If in doubt, use a damp microfibre mop instead.
Do steam mops actually sanitise floors?
At sufficient temperature and dwell time, steam kills the majority of common surface bacteria, and independent testing supports this. It is not the same as disinfecting with a registered product, and it depends on holding the head over an area long enough.
Can I add cleaning solution to a steam mop?
No, unless the manufacturer sells a specific product for that model. Detergents foam and leave residue inside the boiler, which clogs the machine and usually voids the warranty.
Why has my steam mop stopped producing steam?
Almost always mineral scale from tap water blocking the boiler or nozzle. Descale according to the manual and switch to distilled water. Check the pad is properly seated as well, since some models will not steam without it.
How often should steam mop pads be washed?
After every use. A dirty pad redeposits soil and stops absorbing, so the mop pushes dirt around instead of lifting it. Wash without fabric softener, which coats microfibre and destroys its absorbency.
Are steam mops safe around babies and pets?
That is one of their main advantages, since they clean without leaving chemical residue on a floor that a crawling baby will touch. The machine itself gets very hot, so store it out of reach and let it cool before putting it away.
