Editorial Policy
The rules our writers work to, and what a brand cannot buy from us.
Independence
Rankings on Marketora are decided by the research process described on our methodology page and by nothing else. Specifically:
- No brand, retailer or affiliate network can pay for inclusion in an article, a position in a ranking, a higher score, or the removal of a criticism.
- No brand sees an article, a score or a draft before publication.
- Writers are not compensated according to which product ranks first, or according to revenue from any individual article.
- We include products that pay us no commission whenever they are the right answer, and several appear in current articles.
If a brand attempts to make coverage conditional on a commercial arrangement, we decline and, where it is relevant to readers, we say so in the article.
Sourcing
We prefer primary sources. In practice that means manufacturer technical documentation and manuals over marketing pages, published standards over summaries of them, regulator and recall databases over news coverage of recalls, and named independent laboratory testing over aggregated scores of unclear origin.
Where a claim rests on a specific external source, we identify it in the text. Where we are drawing on patterns in owner reports rather than a single source, we describe it that way rather than presenting it as measurement.
What we do not publish
- Fabricated reviews or testimonials. We do not write customer quotes, we do not commission them, and we do not reproduce them from sources we cannot verify.
- Manufactured urgency. No countdown timers, no stock-level warnings, no live purchase notifications, no claims that a price is about to rise.
- Unverifiable discount claims. We are not the seller and do not know a retailer's pricing plans.
- Health, medical or safety claims beyond our competence. Where a product touches on a medical question, we point to the relevant clinical guidance and recommend speaking to a professional.
- Content generated without human review. We use research tools, as most publications do. Every article is read, checked against sources and edited by a person before it is published, and a named person is accountable for it.
Safety-critical categories
Some categories carry risks that a normal product comparison would understate. Infant and child products are the clearest case. In these categories we lead with the safety position rather than burying it, we defer to the guidance of the relevant standards body or paediatric authority, and where a whole product category carries a documented risk we say so at the top of the page.
We will publish a ranking that recommends against the category a reader arrived searching for, if that is what the evidence supports.
Updates and corrections
Articles carry a last-updated date reflecting when the content was actually reviewed. We revisit each article on a schedule, and immediately when a product is recalled, discontinued or substantially revised.
When we correct an error that changes a recommendation, we note the correction at the top of the article rather than silently editing it. When we correct a typographical or factual detail that does not change a conclusion, we amend it and update the review date.
Report an error to editorial@marketora.org. We aim to respond within two working days.
Reader feedback
If you bought something on our recommendation and it disappointed you, that is information we want. Owner reports over time are a substantial part of how we assess reliability, and yours is worth more to us than another round of specification comparison.
