Sony's noise cancelling is a fraction behind Bose on low-frequency rumble and ahead on mid frequencies like office chatter, which for most people is the more annoying noise. What actually matters when you are choosing, and what is marketing noise.
Fit decides everything, so test the tips
Without a proper seal, bass disappears, noise cancelling stops working and the earbuds fall out. Most people use the medium tips because they came fitted, and a substantial proportion are wearing the wrong size.
Try every size supplied, including a different size in each ear, which is more common than people expect. Most companion apps include a seal test that tells you objectively whether you have it right.
Noise cancelling is not one number
Active noise cancelling works best on constant low-frequency sound: engine drone, air conditioning, train rumble. It works much less well on sudden, high-frequency noise like speech and cutlery.
So the right question is what you want to block. For flights, prioritise low-frequency performance. For an open-plan office, mid-range performance and good passive isolation matter more.
Check multipoint if you use a laptop
Multipoint lets earbuds hold connections to two devices at once and switch automatically when audio starts. If you take calls on a laptop and listen on a phone, this is the difference between seamless and constantly re-pairing.
